What Luggage Can You Take on TUI?

By  Enda

We explain what luggage you can take when flying with TUI. This used to be quite simple, but it has become really complicated in the last 2-3 years. Your luggage allowance will vary depending on what type of holiday you book with them. This does make this extremely complicated unfortunately.

It's worth pointing out that, if a cruise includes flights with a different airline, you’ll usually find details of your luggage allowance on your e-ticket or confirmation email. Some airlines don’t give infants their own allowance – please check with the airline separately if you’re unsure.

However, let's start with TUI check-in luggage, that's the luggage you have to put in the hold area of the aircraft. For your information, TUI Airways flights have a flight number that starts with TOM or BY.

Check In Luggage Allowance for TUI

TUI are one of the few companies who have different luggage allowances depending on the holiday or flight that you have booked with them. According to their website:

  • If you’ve booked on or after 21st December 2023 and are travelling from 1st May 2024 onwards, all their packages now include at least 20kg of checked-in luggage when you fly with TUI Airways.
  • If you’ve booked a TUI BLUE, Sensatori by TUI BLUE, Holiday Village, A La Carte or a TUI River Cruises package with TUI Airways flights, you’ll get 25kg of luggage allowance per person.
  • Couples who’ve booked one of their wedding packages will get 25kg hold luggage each when flying with TUI Airways.
  • Just so you know, all Marella Cruises and all Marella Cruise & Stay holidays have a 20kg luggage allowance per person.
  • You’ll still get 23kg of luggage allowance on all packages with Premium seating on long-haul flights with TUI Airways.

If you’re not travelling with TUI Airways, and you’ve booked before 21st December 2023 or you’re travelling up to and including 30th April 2024, check your booking confirmation e-mail or Manage My Booking to see your checked-in luggage allowance.

Hand Luggage Allowance for TUI

  • You can take 1 piece of hand luggage per person (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg and with maximum dimensions of 55x40x20cm on a TUI Airways flight.
  • You must be able to lift your hand luggage into the overhead storage compartments yourself. You can bring a Trunki case as hand luggage, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg.
  • In addition to the piece of hand luggage you can also bring one small personal item, things like laptops, handbags or a briefcase and this must be small enough to be stored under the seat.

TUI Luggage Allowance Children

If you’ve booked one of their packages on or after 21st December 2023 and are travelling from 1st May 2024 onwards, children over 2 will get a least 20kg of checked-in luggage and 10kg hand luggage when you fly with TUI Airways.

  • With a TUI BLUE, Sensatori by TUI BLUE, Holiday Village, A La Carte or a TUI River Cruises package with TUI Airways flights - they’ll get 25kg of luggage allowance per person. Just so you know, all Marella Cruises and all Marella Cruise & Stay holidays have a 20kg luggage allowance per person. They’ll still get 23kg of luggage allowance on all packages with Premium seating on our long-haul flights with TUI Airways.
  • If you’re not travelling with TUI Airways, you’ve booked before 21st December 2023 or you’re travelling up to and including 30th April 2024, check your booking confirmation e-mail or Manage My Booking to see your checked-in luggage allowance.
  • If you’ve booked a flight only, there’s no hold or hand luggage allowance for infants.
  • If you are an accompanying adult, you can bring a collapsible pushchair onboard, however, this will count towards your own hand luggage allowance. The dimensions must be no more than 55x40x20cm, and it can’t weigh more than 10kg. You also have the option to check this in with your luggage, or take it to the aircraft door where they place it in the hold without charge. Please let the check-in staff know which you prefer on the day.

TUI Excess Charges

If you have luggage that is overweight when checking in there are hefty excess charges:

  • Short haul flights - £13 or £17 per kilogram
  • Mid haul flights - £15 or £19 per kilogram
  • Long haul flights - £18 or £27 per kilogram

TUI Luggage FAQ

Can you check in luggage the day before you fly?

The only time you have the possibility of checking your luggage in the day before is if your slight has a TOM flight number. This only applies if you are flying from Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol or Gatwick.

  1. Birmingham for flight times before noon - check in the day before between 2-9pm
  2. Manchester for flight times before noon - check in the day before between 2-9pm (Terminal 2)
  3. Bristol for flight times before noon - check in the day before between 2-9pm
  4. Gatwick for flight times before noon - check in the day before between 2-9pm (North Terminal)

Not available for flights to the USA and P&O Cruises flights to Tenerife and Barbados.

What happens if your luggage is too heavy on arrival at the airport?

We highly recommend making sure you are not overweight when you arrive at the check in desk, because the excess charges are ridiculous.

  1. Short haul flights - £14 per kg for each kilo that you are over
  2. Medium haul flights - £14 per kg for each kilo that you are over
  3. Long haul flights - £18 per kg for each kilo that you are over

These may also vary depending on winter or summer travel. You do of course also have the choice to take something out to reduce the weight.

Can you pool your luggage allowance with TUI?

You can pool your luggage with anyone else travelling on your booking. It is however worth noting that each bag can only weight up to 25 Kg.

Luggage Tags

TUI check your luggage in electronically so you no longer get a paper luggage tag. If you want to use luggage tags then you will need to buy your own. Luckily those are quite cheap and you can read more about luggage tags here.
