When it comes to any type of skiing and indeed winter sports, Europe has more than its fair share of amazing resorts. These do of course vary a lot in price from the downright luxurious and expensive, to the more reasonably priced holiday options.
Europe however pretty much has it all, and has a lot to offer any skier, irrespective of their capability. If you have not been to Europe on a skiing holiday, or even if you are thinking about expanding your horizons and experience, you’ll find something that catches your eye. There are many people who have visited locations in Europe and now would not go anywhere else.
On mainland Europe alone there is a rich and varied selection of great resorts to visit. The countries associated with skiing holidays are of course the world famous French skiing resorts, the sheer beauty of Austria, Switzerland and the tiny principality of Andorra.
If it is your first time then you really should start with France. It is known the world over as the true home of skiing, and the French really know how to do a quality vacation. They are experienced in delivering a high quality holiday and the scenery alone can take your breath away.
Visit France - The True Home of Skiing
Some of the best resorts include the Courchevel resort, which has four different ski resorts within one area which provide the perfect blend of quality and affordability in a skiing trip. From the grossly overpriced 1850 resort, the playground of Europe’s film stars and playboys, to the seemingly remote 1350 at the bottom of the hill, you have so much to choose from in Europe’s finest skiing country. With the kids or with your friends, France is truly a destination that will make for a memorable skiing vacation.
Other destinations include Chamonix, Tignes, Morzine, Val-d'Isere, Megeve, Chatel, Les Gets and Saint-Gervais-les Bains.
Visit the Slopes of Italy
How about some of the Italian resorts? I am huge fan of almost anything Italian. Many people believe that Italy is an expensive country to visit, but I have never found that to be the case. There are tourist spots in many countries where you may get ripped off. As long as you avoid those then it is not expensive to stay or eat there.
In fact when it comes to skiing holidays Italy is known to be the cheaper way to ski. It also benefits from a diverse range of resorts, like the tiny Alba resort, as well as some larger, more sizeable areas to ski.
Famous for its depth of culture, amazing food and great wine, Italy is the ideal place to take a skiing break in Europe, and the weather’s good too! The main Italian ski resorts are: Breuil-Cervinia, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Courmayeur, Sestriere, Livigno, Andalo, Canazei, La Thuile, Aosta Valley and Bardonecchia.
Bordering on Italy is the country of Croatia. This is a country still in its infancy and the one thing you can be sure of is that you will be able to get some amazing value for money holidays in some top notch resorts.
From the international standard ski resorts to their world class restaurants, Croatia is certainly a country on the up, and its skiing facilities can only improve as more and more tourists flock to their slopes each year.
Some of the top destination ski resorts in Croatia are: Mrkopalj, Delnice, Favna Gora, Cavle, Lovinac and Fuzine.
Ever Tried Bulgaria for Skiing?
We think Bulgaria is an excellent skiing destination to ski and also to take the kids. The Bulgarian people are very friendly and the cost of living there is very cheap, especially when compared to the prices that we pay in the United Kingdom. Like many of the European nations Bulgaria depends a lot on tourism for their economy. They know how to appreciate the value of tourism, and the quality of treatment and service they are prepared to offer for your investment.
Some of the best ski resorts in Bulgaria are: Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo, Vitosha, Chepelare, Razlog, Samokov, Govedartsi and Uzana.
This is my own favourite choice and one beautiful country with wonderful people. Their food is also fantastic and they are best known for their huge variety of Christmas markets. When we think of skiing, we often imagine the Alpine ideal, log cabins with breathtaking scenery and fresh, clean air.
If that is your perfect skiing holiday then it doesn’t come much better than Austria. If you want a skiing destination that has it all, why not try Austria for that touch of class with your skiing.
Austria has some of the most famous ski resorts in the world and they include: Solden, Ischgl, Innsbruck, St Anton am Arlberg, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Lech, Zell am See and Schadming.
Switzerland & The Alps
Located not far from Austria is the very beautiful Switzerland which shares the Alps with Austria and Italy. When you add to that the experience of the ski slopes and then realise that Switzerland is also the home of chocolate and cuckoo clocks, you will be amazed at how picturesque this modern nation has managed to be.
Like Austria, Switzerland also hosts some world famous resorts that include Zermatt, Verbier, St Moritz, Davos, Wengen, Engelberg, Grindelwald, Saas-Fee and Laax.
Skiing in Scotland
For those of us living in the UK, it is all too easy to forget about what Scotland has to offer in terms of a great skiing holiday. Now Scotland is of course better known for its famous golf courses like St. Andrews, but it has much to offer in terms of a great skiing holiday as well.
So as you can see skiing in Europe is an ideal way to spend your holidays. If you love skiing, you are guaranteed to find a great resort somewhere. The one thing that determines where you can go is your available budget. There will be choices though for even the lowest of budgets.
Many resorts offer training academies, so you can learn to ski if you are a beginner, and you can also work to improve your skills while you are there, ensuring that your skiing trip is both useful and memorable.
Whatever you are looking for, choose Europe as your number one skiing destination, for that perfect blend of quality, tradition and culture, and for a holiday that is truly breathtaking.
